WHEREAS the late Martin McGuinness believed that the principles of respect for the Irish language, proper inquests for those families that have lost loved ones and accountability for those responsible, and the ultimate and guaranteed right to self-determination for the people of Ireland alone constitute the only path to a free and united Ireland; and
WHEREAS since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement twenty years ago there have been several obstacles to full implementation of a Bill of Rights in the North as well as an All-Ireland Charter of Rights; and
WHEREAS the St. Andrew’s Agreement of 2006 mandates that the British government gives the Irish language official status equal to that granted to the Scots Gaelic and Welsh languages; now be it therefore
RESOLVED that the Ancient Order of Hibernians does hereby endorse fully and unequivocally the Martin McGuinness Principles of Equality, Respect, Truth, and Self-Determination; will promote the same; and will undertake to encourage other Irish-Americans, their organizations, elected officials, candidates for office, and friends and family to endorse and fully support the Martin McGuinness Principles.
Adopted in Convention and signed and witnessed this Fourteenth Day of July in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Eighteen, the two hundred and forty-second year since the founding of the American republic, and the one hundred and second since the Proclamation of the Irish republic.
