The last few weeks have illustrated our need to sustain and increase our charitable efforts toward increasing vocations, the pursuit and dissemination of Irish History, decreasing hunger and providing relief in the face of natural disaster. Hurricane Florence reminded us that natural disaster is never far from our door. The pernicious predilection of pedophilia makes all too clear the need to remain united in our defense of the church and support the formation of faithful servants of the church. The challenges we have recently experienced are balanced by the joy and celebration associated … [Read more...] about Charities & Missions Update

Immigration Report – October 2018
I ask that each Division and State to comply with our Constitution and appoint an Immigration Chair. This chair is a resource on promoting fair and equitable immigration between Ireland and the USA and providing members with background on current Irish and US immigration policies, issues and concerns. It’s very easy for Irish citizens to visit here for up to 90 days and for US citizens to visit Ireland for the same amount of time. But what about staying longer? Or living, studying or working, here or there? That's when visas come into play and in both cases, it's not easy! The … [Read more...] about Immigration Report – October 2018

PROTEST ON THE PRAIRIE
In the late 1800s, banks were charging as much as 50% interest on mortgages and Railroad rates were uncontrollably high. As a result, mid-west farmers were experiencing a downward economic spiral. In Kansas, among the frustrated farmers, one voice was heard that would unite them in search of a solution. It came from Mary Elizabeth Lease who raised her voice in defense of her Kansas farming neighbors. Mary Ellen, as she was known, was the sixth child of Irish immigrants, Mary (Cullen) and Joseph Clyens, who had fled Ireland’s Great Hunger. Born in Pennsylvania on 11 September 1850, she … [Read more...] about PROTEST ON THE PRAIRIE

September 13th is Commodore John Barry Day, a National Holiday of the Order
Did you know that the first flag officer and founder of the United States Navy was an Irishman? His name was John Barry and Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, said in his eulogy at Barry's graveside, "He was born in Ireland, but America was the object of his devotion and the theater of his usefulness." Barry was born in Co. Wexford, Ireland in 1745 and grew up with a great love for the sea. As a young man, he emigrated to the Crown colonies in America and by 1760, he was employed in a shipbuilding firm in Philadelphia. TO WIN BY LOSING
On 22 September 1864, an Irish-American Civil War officer became a national hero after losing a battle! His name was James A. Mulligan. James was born in Utica, New York, in 1829, to Irish immigrant parents. After his father’s passing, he and his mother moved to Chicago where, at age 27, James was a popular Irish-American lawyer and Democratic politician. At a time when the Irish population of Illinois was more than 87,000, he commanded the respect and allegiance of Chicago’s large Irish community. He joined a local National Guard unit called the Chicago Shield Guards and was … [Read more...] about TO WIN BY LOSING
AOH Repeats Call for US Northern Ireland Special Envoy After Arrest of Loughinisland Journalists
The arrest of award-winning veteran journalists Trevor Birney and Barry McCaffrey for their work connected to the 2017 documentary “No Stone Unturned” is an attack on one of the accepted pillars of a free society: free speech expressed through an independent press. It is also a blatant assault on the US-brokered Good Friday Agreement and its commitment to bring a lasting peace by addressing with justice the legacy of the troubles. Birney and McCaffrey were arrested for their investigative journalism of the 18 June 1994 attack on the Heights Bar in the remote village of … [Read more...] about AOH Repeats Call for US Northern Ireland Special Envoy After Arrest of Loughinisland Journalists
A DAY TO REMEMBER
August 15 is a special day for Catholics around the world because it is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. It is also special for our AOH cousins in Ireland who march that day to show pride in their heritage on ‘Lady’s Day’ as it’s called. However, on that day in 1995 an historic event also took place in Derry as the American AOH and LAOH joined with the AOH Board of Erin (BOE) to march in that parade. Our National Presidents, Ed Wallace and Kathy Linton led the line of march behind the American and Irish flags alongside Hibernian leaders from Ireland, England, Scotland and … [Read more...] about A DAY TO REMEMBER
AUGUST 2018 BULLETIN
A chairde: Last May I arranged to meet with Mark Thompson, of Relatives for Justice, a Christmas Appeal recipient. A dozen victims' families arrived. They wanted the AOH to know how much they appreciate our AOH donations, but also how much they need American moral, political and public pressure on the British, to win justice. They are counting on the AOH, as the voice of the Irish in America, to rally that American pressure. Following our National Convention, I have been directed by our National President, to work with brothers across the country, in putting the British under … [Read more...] about AUGUST 2018 BULLETIN

We have the August Catholic Action update from Ohio State Chairman Pat Lally ... NEWS OF INTEREST --On June 25, the U.S. Supreme Court vacated a ruling by a Washington State court against florist Baronelle Stutzman. The court returned the case to the Washington Supreme Court, instructing reconsideration in line with the Masterpiece Cakeshop decision earlier in June. In the Masterpiece case, the court had determined that Colorado cannot compel Christian baker Jack Phillips to bake a cake for a homosexual wedding. In Washington, Stutzman had similarly faced compulsion to violate … [Read more...] about Catholic Calendar – August 2018
Statement from the National Board of the AOH on the Passing of Past National President and Secretary Emeritus Thomas McNabb.
It is with deep sadness that the Ancient Order of Hibernians learned of the passing of Thomas McNabb. Brother McNabb was the living embodiment of Hibernians and shaped the Order for over half a century; his contributions to the Order will continue to have impact long after his passing. Brother McNabb was born and raised in Auburn, New York, where he joined the Auburn Hibernian Division in 1955. Tom served his division in every capacity and started many local Irish-American traditions such as the Friends of Ireland Annual St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon and Auburn’s Irish Festival. … [Read more...] about Statement from the National Board of the AOH on the Passing of Past National President and Secretary Emeritus Thomas McNabb.

VA. Hibernian’s Seek Answers on Removal of Irish Immigrants Name From Fitzgerald Square
Alexandria’s Hibernians have noticed that something is missing from Alexandria's newly renovated Fitzgerald Square: the name of Col. John Fitzgerald. Ironically on St. Patrick's day of this year, the City Council of Alexandria announced without explanation that the new upscale park would now be designated "King Street Park at the Waterfront," stripping the name of this prominent Irish American from the public space. Irish immigrant Col. John Fitzgerald is a significant figure in both the history of Alexandria and the United States. Fitzgerald was prominent in … [Read more...] about VA. AOH Vice President O’Connell Challenges Misleading Article in Belfast Telegraph
In response to an inaccurate post on the Tyrone AOH Facebook page concerning the AOH National Convention, a reporter from the Belfast Telegraph reached out to Vice President O'Connell for an interview. Despite efforts to clear up the inaccuracies and relay the facts, the reporter instead in her article persisted in parroting misinformation and conflated irrelevant detains resulting in portraying a specious inaccurate narrative. Below is worthy Vice President O'Connells response to the editor of the Belfast Telegraph. It should be noted, and as was explained ad nauseum to the reporter, … [Read more...] about AOH Vice President O’Connell Challenges Misleading Article in Belfast Telegraph
AOH Reiterates Their Continuing Commitment to the Families of Legacy Victims of the Troubles
Meeting at their National Convention, the Ancient Order of Hibernians passed a resolution reiterating their commitment to the families of the Legacy Victims of the troubles WHEREAS hundreds of families of victims killed directly by British forces or in collusion with loyalist criminals during the conflict known as the Troubles continue to be denied truth and justice about their murdered loved ones, thereby compounding their grief; and, WHEREAS these same families of what is known as Legacy Victims encounter resistance from British judges, languish in courts denied funding by the British … [Read more...] about AOH Reiterates Their Continuing Commitment to the Families of Legacy Victims of the Troubles
